The Digestive Disease Endoscpy Center
has adopted the following policy concerning
Patient's Rights and Responsibilities

- To receive respectful treatment and the best care possible, consistent with the mission and capabilities of the Center.
- To obtain information about the services you will receive, including the names of your physician and the nurse caring for you.
- To participate in decisions regarding your care and to refuse treatment.
- To have all communications and records pertaining to your care treated confidentially.
- To obtain information in advance about any medical research that you might participate in & to formally consent to such participation in writing.
- To examine and receive an explanation of your bill regardless of the source of payment; and to receive an explanation of the charges/fees for specific services provided in the Center.
- To receive information from your physician, or his designee, regarding your after-discharge care and following-up activities.
- To be informed of the grievance procedure.
- To expect emergency procedures to be implemented without unnecessary delay.
- Impartial access to treatment regardless of race, color, sex, religion, handicap, national origin, or disability.
- To expect safe transfer when necessary, accompanied by the records.

- To provide accurate & timely information about your health care status, including medications and past medical history.
- To cooperate with your physician and Center staff by following the policies and procedures of the Center; following the staffs' directions; asking questions if something is unclear; & by informing someone if you choose to refuse treatment.
- To be considerate of other patients in the Center, and to direct any family members or friends to act in a similar manner.
- To promptly pay for services rendered consistent with your health insurance plan, including any self-pay portions.

- The medication you received for your endoscopy procedure may slow your reflexes even when performing simple tasks. You should not drive, operate machinery, drink alcoholic beverages, do any strenuous activity, or sign legal documents for 24 hours. Rest today.
- Do not take any tranquilizers, sleeping pills, or pain medication today.
- Special Instructions:
a.) Gas and bloating is normal after certain procedures. Passing gas and belching is encouraged. Flexing your knees while lying down may be helpful.
b.) If you develop a sore throat, after your EGD procedure, gargle with warm salt water or use throat lozenges.
c.) Notify your doctor immediately if you develop any of the following:
- Sudden severe chest or abdominal pain
- Black tarry stools
- Vomiting or coughing up blood
- Breathing difficulty
- More than 1 or 2 Tbsp. of bright red rectal bleeding
- Increased abdominal bloating
- Temperature over 100° F
- Persistent nausea or vomiting
These symptoms could indicate a complication that would require medical attention.
If you fail to notify your physician, it could result in more serious consequences.
- You will be instructed on return to work, activity, diet, medications, and follow-up appointments.
- In the future, call your physician if you develop any of the following symptoms:
- Change in bowel habits
- Blood in your stool
- Abdominal pain
